Released in 1981 on the Clash’s “Combat Rock” album, this song was not about anyone in particular. It was just a song they jammed to and later added lyrics. Many thought it was about Mick Jones’ wanting to leave the Clash, but he said it wasn’t.
Paul Simonon played bass for the Clash. He grew up in England and met Mick Jones and formed the Clash with Joe Strummer. He didn’t know how to play the bass, but Mick showed him what to play. He’s credited with coming up with the band’s name and art direction. He sometimes switched instruments with Joe during concerts, if the bass part was too hard.
