“Long Train Runnin” was written by Tom Johnston sometime around 1970 to 1971. The reason for the time range is because the Doobies played this song live for three years and just made up lyrics each time. They considered it a throw-away song but their producer really liked it, so they decided to record it in 1973. So, Tom wrote the final lyrics while sitting in the bathroom.
Tiran was the Doobie’s bass player until 1980. He returned briefly from 1987 to 1992. His basslines on the Doobie’s early hits were famous for being melodic and laying down a great groove. His style is much like Paul McCartney’s. Ironically, Tiran plays in a Beatles tribute band now. On “Long Train Runnin”, Tiran lays down a great RnB like groove and adds several tasty fills.
